The pharmaceutical chemistry department is the specific department as it is involved in the development of modern pharmaceuticals in view of selection and preparation, structure metabolism, structure-activity relationships and it is the link between both chemical and biological disciplines, the primary aim of this department is to provide the students, how the drugs biologically strongly correlated with the chemical structure, this branch includes the pharmaceutical organic chemistry, which involves different classes of organic compounds, their nomenclature, stereochemistry, synthesis, chemical reactions, which will serve as fundamental basic knowledge in chemistry, Pharmaceutical analytical chemistry is also included in the branch of chemistry that deals in the analysis and determination of drug concentration in various pharmaceuticals also in biological fluids, it is the backbone of the pharmaceutical industry and it assists quality control of intermediate products and to ensure the product is safe and effective.
The department of pharmaceutical
chemistry is one of the central important branches of the institute. It is
equipped with state of the art facilities to undertake academics in Bachelor of
Pharmacy course. In the frontier area of phytochemical research, the focus will
be laid on isolation, characterization and evaluation of biological activities
both by in-vitro and in-vivo models. We teach students to synthesize drugs in
the laboratory that help them during their role in industries and society.
Analysis of drugs and pharmaceutical
chemicals form the backbone of research and development in pharmaceutical
industry. The department focuses on training the graduate students on how to
use the modern and newer instrumental analytical techniques such as HPLC, UV-Visible
Spectroscopy, Flourimetry and Flame photometry.
The department has a Pharmaceutical
Chemistry Lab (Inorganic /Organic Chemistry Lab), Pharmaceutical Chemistry Lab
II (Pharmaceutical Analysis Lab), Pharmaceutical Chemistry Lab III (Medicinal
Chemistry Lab) and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Lab IV (Central Instrumentation
Facility).
Scope of Pharmaceutical chemistry is majorly in the research and development of new medicines for pharmaceutical companies or government agencies. One can also enter the domain of teaching after completing MSc Pharmaceuticals by giving exams like SLET, NET etc in India.
